Individual performance programme

From Olympic Gold Medallists to the Fastest Woman in Britain, many great athletes have walked King's halls.

King’s strives to achieve excellence in all that it does; to support sporting excellence, as part of our Performance Sport programme, King’s Sport & Wellness has established Performance scholarships to identify and advance the University’s most talented individual student-athletes and sports teams.

Applications for the 24/25 Performance Programme open on Thursday 1 August 2024 and will close on Sunday 15 September.

Levels of Scholarship Support

Cash award: £1000

Criteria: Athletes who currently compete at the highest level in their sport - an international or national representative level in a senior squad competing at the highest level of World/Olympic events or equivalent with a commitment to contributing to King’s Sport & Wellness.

Free gym membership: Access to 3 facilities at Strand, London Bridge and Waterloo.

Strength & Conditioning Support: Individualised sport and athlete specific 1-1 and group sessions morning, afternoon and evening during term times. Individual personalised programme and support as well as Sports Science Testing and Monitoring.

Dual Career Support: Commitment to academic flexibility to ensure athletes can train and compete, undertake leadership and employability award, access to 5 career led workshops.

Personal Development and Athlete Lifestyle Support: Monthly 1 to 1 sessions during term times and individual development plan.

Nutrition and Sports Psychology: Up to 5 sessions during term time.

Physiotherapy: Up to 10 sessions across the year.

Sports Massage: Available at various times throughout the year. Access to Recovery Clinic and Athlete Social Sessions.

Access to performance workshops:

  • International Travel.

UKAD anti-doping workshops: Become an accredited anti-doping ambassador.

Kit: Athletes will also get access to King's Sport & Wellness Performance Branded Kit.

Grant: £500

Criteria: Athletes who currently compete or have recently competed at the highest level as an international or national representative athlete at a continental level for their country such as Junior World Championships, U23 World Championships, Senior European Championships or equivalent.

Student also may compete in the highest standards of BUCS or other national-level sports competition, with a commitment to contributing to King’s Sport & Wellness.

Free gym membership: Access to 3 facilities at Strand, London Bridge and Waterloo.

Criteria: Athletes who compete in the highest standards of BUCS, other national-level sports competition or equivalent, with a clear commitment to contributing to King’s Sport & Wellness and continue advancing personal performance.

Free gym membership: Access to 3 facilities at Strand, London Bridge and Waterloo.

Strength & Conditioning Support: Sport specific group sessions morning, afternoon and evening during term times. Individual personalised programme and support as well as Sports Science Testing and Monitoring.

Dual Career Support: Commitment to academic flexibility to ensure athletes can train and compete, undertake leadership and employability award, access to 5 career led workshops.

Personal Development and Athlete Lifestyle Support: Monthly 1 to 1 sessions during term times and individual development plan.

Athlete Lifestyle Support: Minimise the impact and stress of lifestyle factors on your ability perform and adapt to training. Our wellbeing coaches are here to help.

Dual Career Support: 1 to 1 help with balancing a healthy student-athlete lifestyle.

Academic Flexibility: In line with our TASS Dual Career Accreditation, elite athletes can apply for academic flexibility when training or competition clashes may arise.

Strength and Conditioning: World-class, knowledgeable and experienced strength and conditioning coaches with the ability to coach all sports.

Performance Nutrition: Comprehensive nutritional support including: food diary analysis, macronutrient timing, recipe cards & budget shopping advice.

Gym Access:

  • King's Sport & Wellness Performance Gym at Waterloo
  • King's Sport & Wellness Campus Gyms: Located at Strand & London Bridge. facilities free weights, cardio equipment, studio, spin studio and all classes (pilates, yoga, circuits, etc.)

Physiotherapy: Consultation, guidance & rehabilitation programmes from world-class physiotherapists on any major injuries.

Sport Psychology / Behaviour Change: Consultation, guidance & plans from world-class sport psychology experts.

Up to 5 career development workshops and 1-1's with our Careers and Lifestyle team, which run throughout the academic year, to help employability following your sporting career.

TASS Dual Career Accreditation

As a department, King’s Sport & Wellness aims to be the Most Active University in London with our commitment to developing talented athletes reflected in our recent TASS Dual Career Accreditation. As a TASS Dual Career Accredited Centre, we are the biggest site in the southwest.

Receiving this accreditation affirms King’s ambition to ensure students can succeed and perform optimally in both their academic and sporting careers through academic flexibility.
