Global Maternal and Child Health

The World Health Organisation estimates that almost 800 women die each day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth with 95% occurring in low- and middle-income countries. It is further estimated that, every day, over 6,000 infants under one month of age die, with sub-Saharan Africa and southern and central Asia bearing the heaviest burden. These stark figures reflect an unacceptable global health inequity, with the most vulnerable – often pregnant women and children – suffering the most.

The Global Maternal and Child Health Group at King’s aims to improve the care and health outcomes of women and children in resource constrained settings. Building on our key strength of  multidisciplinary research and our strong collaborative partnerships, our work spans basic science through population-based implementation research and benefits from expertise across a range of skills including reproductive physiology, clinical science, nutrition, midwifery and implementation science.
