Course overview

Summer School modules are designed to be intensive, intellectually stimulating short courses. They are taught by King’s academics in academic disciplines where King's has expertise. Classes are highly international, giving students an opportunity to collaborate with peers from all around the globe.

Each module consists of 150 study hours, comprising 45 hours of intensive synchronous and asynchronous teaching, independent study and group work and is examined to university standards. Comparable to an in-semester 15-credit King’s undergraduate module and therefore typically awarded 3-4 US credits or 7.5 ECTS, many summer students ask their home institution to award them external credit for their King's summer module to use towards their degree programme when they return home.

What does this course cover?

Distilled from our BSc in Business Management (ranked 2nd in the UK by Complete University Guide), this pre-university summer module delivered by King’s Business School aims to give you an experience comparable to a mini MBA, specially curated for those who our considering joining our undergraduate programme and want a taster. Together in teams, you’ll embark on the task over five days of formulating and presenting a compelling business plan. Each day, we'll guide you through some of the most important concepts in business: from evaluating the value proposition of your idea, to strategising on how to gain a competitive advantage and projecting its potential market demand and profitability.

The course aims to focus on an interactive, engaging, and practical approach to learning about business management. We'll use real-world case studies, simulations, and experiments to enhance your learning as you develop an idea into a business plan. Our goal is that by the course's conclusion, you'll feel confident in knowing if Business Management is the degree for you.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the module, the students will be able to demonstrate intellectual, transferable and practicable skills appropriate to a Level 4 (first year undergraduate) module and in particular will be able to demonstrate the following subject specific skills:

  • Business Strategy Acumen: This aspect of the module sharpens your strategic thinking skills, enabling you to adeptly navigate diverse business scenarios. By immersing yourself in real-world applications of foundational business principles, you'll refine your ability to critically assess situations and make strategic decisions with confidence.
  • Entrepreneurial Ideation & Execution: At the core of our teachings is the nurturing of an entrepreneurial spirit. We'll deepen your understanding of market theories, predominantly those focusing on consumer behaviour insights. Using this knowledge, you'll be challenged to detect emerging consumer patterns and translate them into actionable and pioneering business ideas.
  • Mastering International Teamwork: Recognising the value of global collaboration and benefiting from King’s global appeal, this part of the module enhances your skills in working within international teams. Through hands-on group activities, you'll experience the nuances of cross-cultural interactions, adapt to diverse communication approaches, and address potential challenges arising from cultural variances. As a result, you'll fortify your global mindset, crucial for thriving in today's interconnected business world.
