Course overview

King’s Pre-University summer courses offer participants an in-depth exploration of the chosen subject area(s) at degree level and give students experience of university-level study. King’s courses provide insight into the key debates, themes and cutting-edge research areas of each of the subjects. Students will enjoy research-enriched teaching through seminars, lectures, workshops and experiential learning activities. Students will need to successfully complete the assignments of each module and meet attendance requirements in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.

What does this course cover?

The aim of this module is to introduce both the theory and practice of politics. Students will learn about a range of philosophical views about politics and about real-world political institutions, practices and movements. Topics may include the history of political thought, modern political philosophy, democracy and its alternatives and politics and economic life.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the module, you should have:

  • An understanding of how to approach thinking about politics, and a grasp of the distinction between normative and empirical questions.
  • Foundational knowledge of both western and non-western political philosophy.
  • A grasp of the arguments in some major contemporary debates, such as that over markets and inequality, democracy, and liberalism.
  • An understanding of the working of central political institutions and practices, and knowledge of how these institutions and practices differ across the world.
