Course overview

This module aims to analyse patient safety in the context of culture, with a focus on defining and creating a strong safety culture. You will explore the development of patient safety as a discipline, paradigms in patient safety and how organisational and wider cultural influences impact and shape our approach to patient safety. There will be a focus on how we define and measure patient safety, how we recognise and respond to patient safety incidents and the latest thinking on how a strong safety culture promotes effective learning and emphasises improvement activity in healthcare. You will reflect on how staff and patients offer different perspectives on patient safety and safety cultures, and you will consider new horizons in patient safety from a research, policy and operational perspective.

What will I achieve?

  • Display mastery in analysing complex clinical scenarios related to patient safety.
  • Demonstrate expertise in evaluating factors that may impact on patient safety.
  • Show a mastery in usage of contemporary tools and resources to address and manage issues related to patient safety in practice.

This module is offered as part of King’s College London’s flexible postgraduate awards in Professional Development. These awards will be one of the most flexible currently offered in the UK, providing the opportunity to study a range of modules from across King’s, both on-campus and online. You can complete individual modules and stack these towards a PgCert, PgDip or MA/MSc.

  • A 2.2 honours degree or international equivalent
  • A CV and personal statement outlining your reasons for study

  • A professional registration in nursing or another allied health profession.

Please note that the above route is optional. You may still take the module as a standalone course within the faculty. You will not be permitted to count credit from this module towards a Professional Development award if you have already used it, or intend to use it, as part of a faculty-based award.
