Course overview

This module provides students with an understanding of research including research methodologies and methods, and the research process and its application to healthcare. The ability to determine the quality of research is essential if nurses are to implement the findings of research in their practice. It provides a foundation in qualitative and quantitative research methods, adopting a structured approach to the evaluation of research evidence and its application to clinical practice. Students will be trained to think strategically while undertaking the postgraduate course, which is useful when writing at length such as a dissertation.

 

What does this course cover?

  • Introduce the research process and its application to healthcare.
  • Provide a foundation in qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Provide a structured approach to evaluation of research evidence and its application to clinical practice.
  • Prepare students to undertake level 7 study including the dissertation.

 

What will I achieve?

  • Be able to provide a critical understanding of quantitative, and qualitative paradigms.
  • Evaluate key features of quantitative and qualitative designs
  • Demonstrate a critical and conceptual understanding of the principles and process of systematic review of evidence
  • Demonstrate a mastery in synthesis and presentation of evidence from multiple studies.

This module is offered as part of King’s College London’s flexible postgraduate awards in Professional Development. These awards will be one of the most flexible currently offered in the UK, providing the opportunity to study a range of modules from across King’s, both on-campus and online.   • A 2.2 honours degree or international equivalent
  • A CV and personal statement outlining your reasons for study

  • A professional registration in nursing or another allied health profession.

Please note that the above route is optional. You may still take the module as a standalone course within the faculty. You will not be permitted to count credit from this module towards a Professional Development award if you have already used it, or intend to use it, as part of a faculty-based award.
