Our cross-cutting Clinical Theme is led by Professor Bijan Modarai and promotes translational research building on the outstanding clinical environment of King’s Health Partners.
Our School leverages a critical mass of clinical academics, clinicians and non-clinician scientists to promote high impact translational research. We adopt a “Team Science” approach, using the strengths and expertise of professionals trained in different fields working together to address clinically relevant research questions. Our near patient studies include bench to bedside work that has led to first in man studies and larger clinical trials funded by the NIHR, MRC and BHF. Our strategy focuses on translation of our basic science discoveries and aims to make significant advances in the prevention, diagnosis, stratification, and treatment of patients with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. We have secured several patents and investigators in our School are working with commercial partners to translate their research. We benefit from the rich clinical expertise available within King’s Health Partners and from the high volumes of patients treated, many of these with complex diseases that we receive as specialist referrals.
We host a sought-after programme of training and mentorship for aspiring clinical academics and early career researchers who not only benefit from a first-rate research environment but are also able to receive comprehensive clinical training thanks to our Trust partners. We offer bespoke mentorship and we have engaged with the newly formed King’s Clinical Academic Training Office to maximise opportunities that are available for our early career researchers.
