Basic Science

Our cross-cutting Basic Science Theme is led by Professor Mike Shattock and underpins our research across all sites.

Understanding cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity requires a multidisciplinary approach. In the school we have more than 50 PIs undertaking a diverse portfolio of basic research. The primary aim of the Basic Science theme is, therefore, to facilitate their research and to ‘add value’ by promoting collaboration between disciplines and enhancing pathways to clinical translation.

Our School has state-of-the-art laboratories and core resources and expertise, including facilities for high-throughput screening and high content imaging, phenotyping of a wide range of small animal models of disease, multimodality in vivo imaging, proteomics, cellular and integrative physiology and viral and non-viral vector production. We foster and stimulate novel, cutting-edge research by promoting and facilitating interactions across these disciplines. Taking advantage of the unique clinical environment present at King’s Health Partners, and together with the Clinical Theme lead, we support a programme of work to promote the translation of our basic science for the benefit of patients. Beyond promoting collaboration within the School, the Basic Science theme aims to promote collaborations between Schools, Faculties at Kings and  Institutions and internationally(for example, by supporting funded programmes with the University of Pennsylvania, Göttingen Heart Centre, Dresden University, and more).
