International Security Programme / Arleigh Burke Chair in Strategy Internship

The Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is offering an internship opportunity over the summer and autumn which is focused on issues related to Indo-Pacific security, US-China military competition, and US defence planning.

Interns will be expected to assist in the ongoing development of a CSIS wargame which imagines a ‘future war’ over Taiwan, as well as research on the Ukraine War, Israel-Hamas War, and China’s nuclear development. The role also includes administrative support for events organisation.

Desirable candidates are asked to have a strong academic record, with students having acquired at least a 3.5 GPA (equivalent to 2:1 in the UK system) and evidence of strong research skills.

  • Salary: The hourly rate is $17.50 for current undergraduates, $18.50 for graduates and $19.50 for those with a master’s degree, expecting to work up to 28 hours per week.
  • Duration: Early August and lasting through autumn.

Cyber Policy and Security Research Fellowship

Chatham House is offering a fellowship to work in the Policy Portfolio team, which oversees current cyber policy issues, with a particular interest in China’s role in cyberspace and the influence of emerging tech on security.

The ideal candidate is expected to have demonstratable expertise in cyber policy topics, experience in media relations, event speaking, strong interpersonal skills and budget management. They are also expected to undertake further research and contribute to the Journal of Cyber Policy, including peer reviewing and conducting fundraising activities.

  • Salary: £45,000 per year.
  • Full-time and permanent position.

New Generation Europe Foundation Academy Fellowship 2024-25

Chatham House is offering a fellowship open to Russian citizens or those interested in working with the Russia and Eurasia Programme. Fellows will develop individual research projects addressing key questions related to the impact of Russia's War on Ukraine, the influence on key systemic forces, domestic and foreign policy capabilities, regional Cohesion and the future of Russian economy.

The successful applicant will have previous experience in researching such topics, have proven leadership experience and show commitment to the goals that are embodied by Chatham House.

  • Salary: £2,365 to cover living costs, accommodation, utilities, food, transport and basic expenses. Additional costs to relocating, payment to the UK’s Immigration Healthcare Surcharge, and other research, outreach and dissemination costs will alternatively be covered.
  • Duration: 10-month contract from October 2024 to July 2025

Research Assistant at the Brookings Metro program

The Brookings Metro program at the Brookings Institution is seeking a Research Assistant to support their work on innovation, artificial intelligence, regional technology ecosystems, and place-based economic development.

This role involves conducting high-quality research on public policy issues, analysing large datasets, responding to statistical/analytical queries from stakeholders, providing literature reviews and more. The Research Assistant will be also expected to perform additional administrative tasks and assist in events planning.

The ideal candidate will hold a BA degree in economics, public policy, urban planning, political science, data science, geography, or other quantitative social science, and at least two years of work experience in a similar role. Please note that they must be authorised to work for any employer in the US.

Military Intelligence Internship at the Council on Foreign Relations

Offered by the Council on Foreign Relations, the intern will perform critical research, administrative assistance and peer review and support fellows who have been selected by the Chief of Staff of the Army and the Air Force, the chief of naval operations and the commandants of the Coast Guards and the Marine Corps.

Interns will also receive further training in the field of foreign policy and international affairs, as well as extensive skills training in writing, researching, and planning.

The ideal candidate will be studying for their undergraduate degree. Military experience and proficiency in Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian or Farsi are an advantage.

  • Salary: $17.50 per hour, expecting to work between 14 and 18 hours per week
