Protecting the values of Higher Education across Europe

Prof. Liviu Matei, Head of the School of Education, Communication and Society led on a project with the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) to set up a pan-European monitoring framework to protect the fundamental values of HE.

On 29-30 May 2024, ministerial delegations from 48 countries held a regular conference of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). At this meeting, the list of six EHEA fundamental values was restated and ministers adopted statements with shared definitions for five of them: academic integrity, institutional autonomy, student and staff participation in higher education governance, and public responsibility for and of higher education. Ministers reiterated their commitments to protect and promote these values as jointly defined in their national systems and endorsed the proposal for a pan-European framework for monitoring the implementation of these commitments.

This proposal was developed by a team led by Liviu Matei, Head of the School of Education, Communication and Society. Prof. Matei also contributed to drafting the joint statements on the fundamental values.

These developments have the potential to contribute significantly to better adapted policy and legal environments, thus supporting universities to fulfill their fundamental mission, which is the production, transmission and dissemination of knowledge as a public good through education, research and civic engagement.– Prof. Liviu Matei, Head of the School of Education, Communication and Society
