Undergraduate stories

Ayo Ilesanmi

Ayo

'I graduated with a BA in Philosophy from King’s in the summer of 2022. During that period I started my job as an Investment Banker at Deutsche Bank, where I cover the Industrials sector.

My job demands analytical thinking, critical reasoning, judgement and decision-making skills. These are skills I had developed and employed throughout my academic discipline, which has been very complimentary to my role in finance.

Studying at a highly ranked institution like King’s exposed me to ambitious and driven individuals, who have greatly influenced my path in life. I am proud to have studied at King’s, and I am thankful for the challenging and inquisitive mindset it equipped me with.'

Marko Fragkiadakis

'I graduated from King’s in 2019 with a BA in Philosophy. I am now an Associate in the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs, where I specialise in debt syndication for European corporate and banking clients.

Studying Philosophy as an undergraduate was instrumental in helping me to develop skills I utilise daily in my current role.In particular, being challenged to form independent and coherent viewpoints as well as learning how to communicate complicated ideas with clarity and precision have been crucial as I have progressed through my career.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at King’s and would encourage students to embrace and actively seek ways to differentiate themselves from peers both academically and socially. '

Megan Binnie

'After graduating with a Philosophy BA, I qualified as a Social Worker for children and families through the Frontline programme.

I am currently moving on to a new role as a Trainee High Intensity Therapist within the NHS. King’s was the only University offering modules in Eastern Philosophy, which made it my first choice.

I enjoyed studying and debating various topics such as Political Philosophy, Gender, and Applied Ethics. My passion for Eastern Philosophy remains – I am a practicing Buddhist and will complete my yoga teacher training this year. My time at King’s, both in and out of the classroom, has been fundamental in shaping my career.'

Robert McLaren

Robert Mclaren

'I began studying Philosophy at King’s in my early 20s after taking a one-year ‘Access to HE’ course. I am severely dyslexic and got a Disabled Students’ Allowance that paid for assistive and accessible technology (ATech) so I could proofread my essays, and a scribe so I could dictate my exams: both kinds of support were vital to my success on the course.

After graduating I worked in the tech sector and then tech policy: I am now the Director of Policy at a think tank. I have a particular interest in how public policy can help more disabled people to access ATech (and I still use this technology myself every day).

Studying Philosophy is an excellent training for a career in public policy. For example, the ability to express complex ideas clearly and succinctly is important for writing a good briefing, or speaking with a busy politician. In addition, learning to use elementary logic to reconstruct philosophical arguments is good preparation for analyzing policy positions, e.g. identifying exactly where the disagreement lies between rival proposals..'
