Our students come from all over the world, from Ghana to Singapore, united in our shared belief in equal and inclusive access to high quality health and social care for everyone, wherever they are. Through our educational programmes we equip our students to become experts and apply the latest global evidence and guidance to healthcare. Our international strategy is enabling us to further embed international perspectives into what and how we deliver our teaching.
Elective placements are an opportunity for our pre-registration nursing and midwifery students to choose where they undertake a part of their practice learning during their studies with us. During an international elective, students learn about nursing and midwifery in a different social, cultural or organisational environment. They are also a chance for students to pursue specialist interests within an area of practice.
Because of our connections, our pre-registration students get a comprehensive clinical education and the chance to work on placements in health and care all over the world. Our students have the chance to practise in completely different healthcare contexts. In 2017, students undertook international electives in 79 countries, from Japan to Namibia. And when international travel wasn’t possible during the pandemic, we worked with our partners to create an award-winning innovative and immersive experience for nursing students online.
Practising nursing in Sri Lanka was eye-opening and something that will stay with me forever…The perspective I gained towards healthcare was amazing. The differences in care aren’t ‘wrong’, in fact they were more successful in many cases. It was all about what was appropriate for the local population.– Phyllida Monroe, Children’s Nursing (2019)
