The internship programme is designed to assist successful applicants to provide a starting point on a clinical academic career pathway and to acquire pre-masters level experience in research methods, service improvement and innovation across many domains, including:
- Exposure to a range of research methods and applied research interventions;
- Experience of innovation in care delivery and service development;
- Implementation and evaluation of innovation;
- Opportunities to work alongside and to be supervised by recognised clinically focused research leaders and role models;
- Exposure to new models of care and to engage with change processes that shape the future of healthcare delivery in London;
- The acquisition of confidence and commitment to disseminating excellence in applied clinical research.

The ICA Pre-doctoral programme aims to support nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to prepare a competitive application for a NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship or other equivalent research training award. Participation in this programme will enable development of a clinical academic career along the HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical academic (ICA) pathway.
There are ten places available. Successful applicants are entitled to maximum of 332 study hours (44 days) taken flexibly in agreement with their NHS organisation over 12 months. HEE will make a direct training allowance contribution of £5,000 per awardee towards employer costs to seconding NHS Trusts. Successful applicants will have all course fees paid to enrol in the King’s College London 30 credit level 7 course titled PhD Funding Proposal Development in Healthcare Research Level 7 (7KANR001) run by the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care.

This scheme aims to support nurses, midwives and Allied Health Care Professionals (AHPs) who meet the eligibility criteria to prepare a competitive application for a NIHR Advanced Clinical and Practitioner Advanced Fellowship (ACAF) or other relevant award, which enables them to continue to develop a clinical academic career along the HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical academic (ICA) pathway. Ten places are available. Successful applicants will be entitled to 225 study hours (30 days) taken flexibly in agreement with their seconding organisation. HEE will make a direct training allowance contribution to seconding NHS Trusts towards employer costs of £5,000 per awardee.
