A clinical academic is a qualified healthcare professional who also works in academia, typically in research, teaching, or both. They balance their time between working in the clinical area conducting research that contributes to the scientific understanding of their field. Every clinical academic post is different, depending on the specialism, experience, and interests of the individual.
The Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care has strong collaborative links with partners across the NHS. We work with our health partners to develop our students, to enhance our research and to find novel solutions that help tackle local, national and global health challenges.
Our Faculty has a track record of supporting clinical academics to secure NIHR doctoral fellowships. Since 2019, NMPC has hosted 25 NIHR/INSIGHT/pre-application/PCAF funded pre-doctoral fellows and 45 funded by the HEE/NHS England ICA pre-doctoral schemes. Of these, 5 have to date gone on to secure further NIHR pre-doctoral funding, such as the PCAF Bridge scheme, to strengthen their proposals and academic CVs ahead of a doctoral application. In total, 15 have successfully secured PhD fellowships since 2019. In addition, we have supported and hosted a further 12 NIHR clinical academic doctoral fellows.

GSTT: ACORN - A Centre Of Research for Nurses & Midwives at Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust was set up to support the national drive to increase nurses’ and midwives’ research engagement. Our aim is to create “a research active workforce who will pioneer and inspire innovative improvements in patient care and safety, as reflected in the GSTT (2022-2025) Nursing and Midwifery (N&M) strategy. Our aspiration is the conduct of high-quality, inclusive nurse and midwife-led research, which generates evidence to influence policy and practice, whilst also providing professional career development opportunities for our nursing and midwifery workforce.
