Four ways to improve end-of-life care for people with dementia

Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK today. Most people with dementia will attend the emergency department at least once in their last year of life and spend an average 20% of their last six months of life in a hospital bed. The number of people dying with palliative care needs is expected to more than double over the next two decades.

Informed by the latest evidence, the briefing includes four calls to action for policy makers:

1. Prioritise dementia as a life-limiting condition
2. Ensure equitable access to integrated palliative dementia care
3. Optimise investment in community and primary care closer to home
4. Invest in palliative dementia care research

Dr Harvey Max Chochinov

Cicely Saunders International Annual Lecture 2023

The 2023 lecture 'Intensive Caring: Reminding Patients They Matter' was given by Dr Harvey Max Chochinov. 

Dr Harvey Max Chochinov is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and a Senior Scientist at CancerCare Manitoba Research Institute. His research in palliative care has resulted in more than 300 career publications, broaching diverse topics such as depression, quality-of-life, suicide, vulnerability, spirituality, and existential distress. He has also led a large program of research on dignity within the healthcare setting, which includes the development and study of Dignity Therapy.

King’s College London has renewed its partnership with the Ngee Ann Academy (NAA) - a leading private education Institution based in Singapore, to continue to deliver King’s BSc Nursing with Honours programme for a further 5 years.

Established in 2018, the partnership was built upon a joint vision to offer qualified nurses in Singapore the opportunity to gain a highly regarded degree in Nursing whilst continuing to work in the country’s healthcare sector. Now in its fifth year, with more than 600 enrolments, the programme continues to grow and adapt to both the local and global environment.

Professor Christine Norton

Professor Christine Norton awarded an MBE in King's 2023 Birthday Honours

Professor Christine Norton was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours List, for her services to nursing research.

A Registered Nurse who has specialised in helping people with incontinence, Professor Norton’s research concentrates on improving symptoms and quality of life for people with chronic bowel conditions. She leads a National Institute for Health and Care Research programme on managing fatigue, pain and incontinence in Inflammatory Bowel Disease called the IBD-Boost Programme.

Dr Sabrina Bajwah wins King's Changemaker Award

Dr Sabrina Bajwah, King’s graduate and Clinical Senior Lecturer, has been awarded the King’s Changemaker Award, as part of the King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards 2023.

Sabrina’s work is challenging structural racism in palliative care, and changing the way medical professionals work to provide equitable care for ethnically diverse patients.

During the first wave of COVID-19, she worked with companies to quickly produce translations of key advice into 25 languages.
