Royal Academy of Music
The Music Department at King’s College London enjoys a close relationship with the Royal Academy of Music. All eligible undergraduate students in the Music Department receive individual instrumental/vocal tuition with teachers from the Royal Academy of Music. This provides the opportunity to combine conservatoire tuition with a university degree.
Teachers are individually allocated, to ensure a close fit for each student’s needs, and a generous allowance of hours means that lessons are frequent. Instrumentalists and singers at King’s generally find many performance opportunities both at the College and in London at large. Each year, several graduating students audition successfully for postgraduate performance courses at conservatoires.
The School of Oriental and African Studies
The School of Oriental and African Studies is a leading centre for the study of ethnomusicology. Students can take modules there to supplement those on offer at King’s. These include modules in African and South East Asia music, as well as on the Music Industry and Radio. The postgraduate student ethnomusicology community is particularly closely linked.
Study abroad programmes
Study abroad programmes connect undergraduates with a wide range of international partners including departments at Heidelberg University, The University of North Carolina, Hong Kong University, Monash University and the University of Auckland.
For those who participate these are life-changing experiences, involving not just the experience of learning in a different environment, but enduring connections with another part of the world. A joint PhD programme also enables postgraduates to benefit from study at both King’s and Hong Kong University.
