Meet Aisha Bismillah from the Department of Chemsitry

Our interview series introduces new researchers who started this academic year in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences.

This week we spoke to Dr Aisha Bismillah, a Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851-Ramsay Memorial Trust Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry.

A supramolecular chemist by training, a specialist in complex chemical systems made from multiple molecules, Aisha's work focuses on using light to trigger beneficial chemical changes in molecules for use in medicine and energy storage.

Dr Aisha Bismillah

What first attracted you to the field of Chemistry?

As a child, I enjoyed ‘mixing things together’ to make something new, whether that was shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom or the ingredients for a cake in the kitchen. I liked – and still enjoy – the idea of creating something new and determining what its purpose was or could be and, hence becoming a chemist.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about Chemistry

Chemistry is only present laboratories, when in actual fact it is in our everyday lives: from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. It is multidisciplinary and anyone can do it if they want!

What's the biggest mystery in science you'd love to solve or see solved?

I want to see some of the key scientific challenges solved. This includes striving towards sustainability, bridging technology from academia to industry and effectively communicating research to the general public.

Get ready to focus on problem-solving, take part in critical thinking, and get hands-on laboratory work, but most importantly make sure to have fun!"– Dr Aisha Bismillah

What advice would you give to someone considering studying Chemistry?

Get ready to focus on problem-solving, take part in critical thinking, and get hands-on laboratory work, but most importantly make sure to have fun!

What do you do in your spare time?

My hobbies are always changing and at the moment they revolve around running and reading. I am also training for my second half marathon.
