Many of the spaces were vacant, this included the Student Union, Student Services, a doctors’ surgery and outdated seminar spaces which were largely disused due to poor repair, building services were also outdated. 9 of the 10 levels of the Macadam building were refurbished to provide 8 new floors of high-quality learning and teaching spaces including a 100 seat lecture theatre, modern centrally timetabled seminar spaces including flexible spaces and spaces with hi-flex seminar technology, Physics teaching & research labs, digital humanities student hub, new student shower facilities and new and upgraded building services including refurbished plant room and WCs. The project was delivered over 4 phases totalling circa. £11m and was completed in February 2020.
