Careers & Employability

Alumni from The Dickson Poon School of Law can be found in many walks of life. Regardless of whether you see your future as working in law or any other sector, Careers & Employability is here to support you throughout your time as a law student and recent graduate. In addition to the university’s central Careers & Employability offering, law students have access to dedicated resources which include careers consultants working exclusively with students from the school.

Our service includes:

  • One-to-one career coaching appointments
  • Review and advice on applications, CVs and cover letters
  • Practice interviews, including practice interviews for scholarships from the Inns of Court
  • Preparation for assessment centres, including case study and group exercise practice
  • A dedicated site providing comprehensive information on how to start your career in law

In addition, we offer a programme of talks and events designed to help students make informed career choices. For these we frequently invite alumni and employers to share their insights. Recent examples include:

  • Careers & Employability running workshops on how to navigate the labour market, networking, application skills for law, exploring options outside of law, and much more.
  • BARBRI running sessions on the SQE exams, the US Bar, legal tech, commercial awareness, and the skills that future lawyers need.
  • Law firms providing their view on what makes a good application or why assessment centres are so important to their candidate selection.
  • Panel discussions with Bar Associations
  • Alumni sharing their career journeys with a focus on employment law, commercial law, careers in government, family law, and more.

Our structured extracurricular activities cover both how to make career decisions and how to orient yourself in the vast sector that law is.  All this is complemented by opportunities offered by Careers & Employability King’s-wide such as:

  • King’s Undergraduate Research Fellowships (KURF) – Complete a summer research project
  • King’s Experience Award – Gain recognition for extracurricular activities that enhance your employability skills
  • Essential Digital Skills – Learn the digital skills required by employers
  • Insights Programme - Complete meaningful work experience, broaden your career horizons and boost your confidence through business treks, work shadowing and virtual micro internships. A great programme if you are unsure about your career options and would like to discover different sectors and roles.
  • Vacancy Board– Search hundreds of jobs
  • Events – Attend Careers & Employability events outside of law
