The Dickson Poon and Yeoh Tiong Lay gifts

The Dickson Poon Gift

In 2012 King’s embarked on a £40million programme of investment in the School of Law. This ambitious initiative was made possible by a personal gift of £20 million from Sir Dickson Poon CBE, a well-known Hong Kong-based philanthropist.

Read more about the gift here.

The Transnational Law Institute

Founded in 2014, The Dickson Poon Transnational Law Institute (TLI) is an interdisciplinary research and teaching centre with a particular focus on transnational and comparative law, legal theory and jurisprudence, collaborative research and legal education.

Distinguished Visitors Programme

The Dickson Poon Distinguished Visitors Programme enables distinguished leaders from the business world, academia, the judiciary, government and the third sector to take up a period of residence in the School and thereby contribute to the School’s research and teaching culture.

During their residence, Dickson Poon Distinguished Visitors are provided with support and facilities to assist them in the many and richly varied projects and initiatives in which they are involved and through which they contribute to public life, while at the same engaging actively with the School’s academic and student community.

The Rt Hon Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers

The School welcomed Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers as the School’s first Dickson Poon Distinguished Visitor in November 2012.

Lord Phillips was Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 2005 to 2008, and the first President of the UK Supreme Court.

King’s Transnational Law Summit 2018

In April 2018, The Dickson Poon School of Law hosted The King's Transnational Law Summit, bringing together academics, lawyers, activists and artists to discuss some of the major challenges facing society. Watch an introduction to this ambitious project and find out more about the Summit on its website, featuring recordings of keynotes, panel discussion and lectures.

Transnational speaker series

The Transnational Speaker Series has seen the School host leading thinkers and practitioners from across the world to discuss law under globalisation. Guest speakers have included thinkers such as Professors Sally Engle Merry, Greg Shaffer, and Peer Zumbansen, Judge Joan E. Donoghue of the International Court of Justice, and William Neukom, President and CEO of the World Justice Project.

King's Transnational Law Summit 2018

King’s Transnational Law Summit 2018 (KTLS18) evolved around the theme of The New Human Condition: Creating Justice for Our Future. It brought together nearly 400 participants from a variety of disciplines around the globe: legal scholars and practitioners, policy makers, city councils and unions, grass-root associations, fiction writers, poets and activists. The inaugural event placed justice at the centre of a wider inter-disciplinary conversation about democratic politics, inequality, health and the environment in a volatile world.

Yeoh Tiong Lay Gift

The Yeoh Tiong Lay gift was made to School in 2013 by the family of Dato‘ Mark Yeoh, alumnus of King’s. Dato’ Mark Yeoh graduated from King’s Law School with an LLB (Hons) in 1987.

The gift of £7 million from the Yeoh family funded LLM scholarships and established the Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law  as well as academic posts -  including the Chair of the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law.

The donation was the largest from a Malaysian family to any UK university.

Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law

The Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law was founded in 2014 as a focal point for interdisciplinary research in law from the perspective of both philosophy and politics. Based in The Dickson Poon School of Law, the Centre has close links with the Departments of Philosophy and Political Economy.

Professor John Tasioulas is the inaugural Chair of Politics, Philosophy & Law and Director of the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy & Law.

Politics, Philosophy & Law LLB

The work of the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre underpins the teachings on King’s Politics, Philosophy & Law (PPL) LLB degree. Launched in 2012, the PPL degree is a unique programme in the UK that allows students to fulfil the requirements of a qualifying law degree while being able to choose from a range of modules in philosophy and political economy.

The PPL degree is designed to equip students with an interdisciplinary education that will prepare them for working in an increasingly globalised environment. The nature of the programme provides access to eminent academics from three outstanding faculties and gives students the chance to consider a wide range of career options through King’s connections and links with London’s global community.
