About the role

Applications are invited for a talented and enthusiastic cardiovascular scientist to join Dr Haotian Gu (Senior NIHR Research Fellow) and Professor Phil Chowienczyk’s team at the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences at King's College London. The postholder will be part of a vibrant multi-disciplinary research group examining whether a new measure of the contraction of the heart derived from ultrasound images can be used to predict patients that benefit from specific treatments and to better understand the pathophysiology of certain types of heart failure.
The post holder will assist the team with recruitment of suitable patients, perform cardiac ultrasound measurements and assist with patient follow-up and analysis of results. They will have the opportunity to write and publish results of research studies in high impact score peer-reviewed journals and report research results at international conferences.
Minimum qualifications are a degree in biosciences and some experience of physiological measurement. Desirable criteria include a PhD (or equivalent higher training) and experience in echocardiography and cardiac imaging. Candidates should be highly motivated individuals with excellent communication skills, and have the ability to work independently.
Formal clinical qualification in cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) is not required but experience with this technique would be an advantage. The post holder will be given training and experience that will assist them in obtaining a formal qualification in echocardiography such as British Society of Echocardiography Accreditation and HCPC Clinical Scientist Registration.
The post is based within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences at St Thomas’ Hospital, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, South Bank Section as part of the King’s College London BHF Centre of Research Excellence. The School and Centres provide an outstanding highly multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and technical support for both basic science and clinical studies.
This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for one year.

Essential criteria
- A degree (BSc or equivalent) in a relevant life science or bioengineering discipline
- A PhD (or equivalent) or equivalent level of specialist experience
- Experience in physiological measurement

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
