Our work with industry

We work with businesses, public sector organisations, artists, and local charities, to help solve their challenges with research and education.

Collaborations can take many forms, from bespoke consultancy to sponsored student projects through to strategic partnerships that realise bold, longer-term science research and education goals.

There is also funding available to resource new collaborations through internal seed funding, Innovate UK smart grants, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, and Horizon Europe collaborative bids.

Using AI to help improve the finance industry

Carmine Ventre, Professor of Computer Science at King's, is using AI to model financial markets and improve tools used in algorithmic trading and the finance industry. Working with the Alan Turing Institute and their partnership with Accenture and KI Insurance, Carmine and his team are simulating the Lloyd's of London Insurance Market, in order to shed light on its dynamics to better forecast future market environments and improve decision making.

Helping a health data company develop new tools

Dr Grigorios Loukides undertook a piece of consultancy with FITFILE, a health data technology company whose products help to unite health data across silos, delivering safer, faster and better health data at a global scale.

Grigorios supported FITFILE in the development of a new anonymisation protocol. His role was two-fold; he developed, validated and tested a diagnosis code anonymisation tool based on the findings of a recent paper of his. Secondly, he implemented a metric that can be used to optimise the anonymisation protocol. In the future, FITFILE and Grigorios plan to extend the tool to work with different types of data and anonymisation/utility requirements.

Pioneering AI for educational assessments

In collaboration with AQA, Dr Yulan He and colleagues are developing methods that enhance the interpretability and accuracy of automated student answer scoring with Large Language Models .

They firstly introduced a novel framework using ChatGPT-generated rationale to train smaller LLMs to score student answers and generate justifiable rationales. They then built upon this model by mimicking human assessment processes with advanced LLM reasoning techniques. The models substantially improved the assessment performance by 38%.

Additionally, they developed an interactive platform that facilitates a proxy for researchers to verify the quality of rationales and supports educators' access to the latest automated explainable assessment LLMs.

Working with the Westminster City Council to innovate with data

We are working with Westminster City Council to explore ways to innovate with data on their Strand-Aldwych redevelopment project. The Data Springboard project aims to build a platform for bottom-up engagements, decisions and innovations, enabling businesses and organisations in the neighbourhood reap the benefits of data sharing.

The team held workshops with public and private stakeholders and the general public to discuss how stakeholders could benefit from data sharing, the challenges we should focus on, and how we should approach data ethics.

"This area of work is a key council priority for the local authority which aligns with short and long-term ambitions of the transformation scheme and is foundational to our wider management model which involves various stakeholders and communities in the area." - Kirsten Zeller, Westminster City Council
