Equipment & facilities

The Department of Informatics is located in the iconic Bush House with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research.

Bush House has state of the art facilities for teaching and research as well as a student common room on the 8th floor, an adjacent terrace with a unique view of London, and on Levels 6 and 7, break-out spaces, modern laboratories, and re-configurable teaching spaces. These, as well as the co-location of professional services, research and teaching staff on Levels 5, 6 and 7 will give you a great sense of belonging to a community during your studies. Informatics shares Bush House with CUSP London, the AI Institute, the King’s Business School and the Entrepreneurship Institute, which offer rich extra-curricular opportunities.

The majority of computer labs for students are located in Bush House where there are up to nine rooms housing over 250 workstations. Computer lab workstations run up-to-date Linux, a Windows virtual machine and many popular programming and scientific software packages. These labs are available to all Informatics students when they are not in use for teaching.

In addition to the rooms in Bush House, there are two computer rooms in the Strand Building, each accommodating approximately 40 workstations, and a further 40 workstations in the King’s Building, all for Informatics students. The King’s Building also houses the Faculty Student Computing Lab where there are 60 workstations for all NMES students. Students have access to specialised hardware sets and lab spaces used in courses on computer systems and robotics

If students wish to purchase their own computer hardware, there are no set requirements or recommendations. The software development tools used in the Department are multi-platform, and freely available – we have a number of agreements with companies to make their software and services available to our students.
