New Study Reveals CARE's Professor John Weinman as the Leading Contributor to Illness Perception Research

Illness perceptions encompass the beliefs individuals hold about the symptoms, potential impact, duration, controllability, and origins of their illness. These perceptions significantly influence various psychological and clinical outcomes in patients across a wide range of conditions (e.g. end-stage renal disease, depression, influenza) and treatments (e.g. vaccination, medication-taking, physiotherapy). Therefore, personal beliefs about illness represent a unique yet potentially changeable factor that can influence prognoses and even survival rates.

A recent paper titled "Illness Perception: A Bibliometric Study" highlights the impact that research in the field of illness perception has had over the years, tracing its evolution from 1975 to 2023. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the most influential scholars, including a notable mention of Professor John Weinman from the Centre for Adherence Research and Education (CARE) at King’s College London.

The study, which analyzed 1813 publications by 5428 researchers sourced from the Scopus database, aimed to address several key research questions. Among them were inquiries into the developments within illness perception research, the identification of prolific scholars, and the recognition of influential journals and publications.

Professor John Weinman: A Leading Contributor

The findings reveal that Professor John Weinman stands as the foremost contributor in the field with a remarkable 64 publications. This places him as a leading figure of illness perception research, underscoring his role in shaping the domain. His contributions are not only numerous but also highly influential, as demonstrated by the bibliometric networks presented in the study. His collaboration and co-citation with other leading figures like Rona Moss-Morris and Keith Petrie signify his foundational influence in the study of illness perception.

CARE: A Hub of Leading Researchers

Professor Weinman has been affiliated with CARE, a leading hub for researchers on medication adherence. CARE focuses on adherence research and education, striving to improve healthcare outcomes through better understanding and management of patient behavior and perceptions. As the study of illness perception evolves, CARE’s efforts will inspire and guide future research.
