History is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, with expertise across most historical disciplines as well as well-established connections to historians and scholars based throughout the university.

Within the Department many different approaches to history are represented, including political, economic, gender, cultural and global history, the history of science and medicine and the history of political thought.

We are particularly well-known for the wide reach and impressive depth of our expertise in areas such as:

  • Medieval History
  • Global history and the history of empires
  • Modern history, including the history of Europe, the Middle East, India, China, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States
  • Early modern British and European history
  • Contemporary British history, including the history of war
  • The history of science, technology and medicine
