Connections & Outreach

We in the Department of History have built close relationships with many of the cultural institutions which make London such a rewarding city to work in. We collaborate with governmental offices and departments as well as with private partners in diverse sectors, including major national and international media organisations.

Members of the Department are regularly engaged in impact and outreach as part of projects that reach from many parts of London to the USA, China and West Africa. Grounded in a passion for history, in a commitment to the relevance of the past in shaping the present and in effective communication skills, our outreach reflects the unique strengths of the Department.

While impact case-studies based on this work were highly rated in the last Research Education Framework (3rd nationally in 2014) the scope of our engagement and our connections stretch much further. Our research has extensive appeal beyond academia, and our staff are recognised as authorities in their fields.

Racism and Citizenship Exhibition

In 2017, Professor Francisco Bethencourt acted as the curator of an exhibition called 'Racism and Citizenship'.

The exhibition aimed to encourage the public to question past and present relations between people, combining emigration with immigration, exclusion and integration, lack of rights and access to citizenship.

The exhibition is now available online virtually and displays two interlinking realities, RACISM, a prejudice relating to ethnic origin combined with discriminatory action, and CITIZENS, the right to residence, work and political participation in a particular country, equally involving duties and responsibilities.
