Blavatnik Awards

Dr Katie Doores receives esteemed Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists

Katie is one of three Blavatnik Laureates, winning the Life Sciences category for her research which aims to improve our preparedness for future pandemics.

Today, the Blavatnik Family Foundation and the New York Academy of Sciences announced the recipients of the 2023 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in the United Kingdom. Now in its sixth year, the Awards are the largest unrestricted prize available to UK scientists aged 42 or younger.

Professor David Edwards receives Medical School's personal tutor of the year award 

Professor Edwards was cited as a source of support and encouragement for his tutees over the years

A yearly teaching award organised by the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine Development team encourages those involved with the Medical School to nominate outstanding teachers and formally acknowledge their work.

Study explores how exercise might mitigate age-related decline in skeletal muscle structure and function

A new study has observed differences in the shape, structure and mechanical properties of nuclei in trained and untrained individuals, potentially helping to explain the anti-ageing effects of exercise.

Research has found that exercise is associated with changes to the nucleus in muscle fibres and may contribute to the protective effects of exercise on muscle function throughout the lifespan.

Antiphospholipid Syndrome

Tracey Jallow (Expert Patient Group) awarded OBE

A member of our Expert Patient Group and regular research collaborator, Tracy was recognised in the King’s New Years Honours list for her volunteering efforts.

In 2008 Tracy Jallow was diagnosed with Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), a disorder of the immune system that causes an increased risk of blood clots and symptoms such as tiredness or numbness and tingling in different parts of the body.
