Located in the heart of London, the research culture of the Department of Film Studies is vibrant, stimulating, diverse, and inclusive. Faculty members’ research interests range over various areas of cinema and media across the globe, including Experimental Media and Moving Image Culture, Film and Media History, Film Theory and Philosophy, and Media and Cities. 

Other areas on which we concentrate include Exploitation and Independent Cinema, Film Music, Gender and Feminist Theory, Historical Film and Adaptation, Queer Theory, Representations of Race, Film Technology, Stardom and Screen Performance. Bi-weekly research seminars provide a platform for both our staff members and research students, and guests from all around the world discuss and explore their latest research findings.
