Applications open - Lau China Institute & Young China Watchers Essay Competition 2024

The Lau China Institute in partnership with Young China Watchers are delighted to announce the launch of their 2024 writing competition. The competition, which is held annually, aims to discover the newest young writers on China in the UK, and provide a platform to help foster the next generation of China experts.

The Lau China Institute together with Young China Watchers welcomes submissions to its 2024 essay competition on the theme 'Whither the China Model: the economic, developmental and social challenges facing China today'.

Interested applicants are invited to submit short essays of up to 1000 words that explore China's economy, and associated economic, social and development challenges in recent years (see the T&Cs for further examples).

To be eligible, applicants must be 35 years or under and living in the UK (UK and non-UK residents with a registered UK bank account will be eligible).

Read the full terms and conditions. Please read these carefully otherwise your application may not be considered.

The Prize

The author of the winning entry will receive £300, be invited to present their essay at the Young China Watchers conference in 2025, and have their essay published on the YCW blog. The winner will be formally announced during the Lau China Institute's flagship event, China Week in October. Two further prizes of £150 each will be awarded for highly commended essays.
