Enhance your skills: Student opportunities at King's

MA student Arta Uka highlights some opportunities to gain expertise for students looking to enhance their academic and professional development in the field of security studies, such as participating in a Summer School Course in Kosovo and obtaining funding for research projects.

Richard and Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship 2024-2025

Global think tank Chatham House offers a fellowship to enhance key leadership skills while expanding understanding of key critical international issues. Academy Fellows are expected to work on an individual research project for specific programmes outlined.

The five available programmes are the Digital Society Initiative, the Europe Programme, the Global Economy and Finance Programme, the International Security Programme, and the UK in the World Programme. In addition, Fellows will have access to workshops, seminars, events, media training, career coaching, writing support and networking opportunities.

There is a stipend of £2,365 to cover living costs, accommodation, utilities, food, transport and basic expenses.

Additional costs such as relocation, payment to the UK’s Immigration Healthcare Surcharge, outreach and dissemination costs will alternatively be covered.

Kosovo International Summer Academy (KSA) 2024

Open to all students within the Department of War Studies, this 10-day long programme is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in diplomacy and conflict resolution.

The programme will focus on “Peacebuilding in post-conflict areas – Diplomacy, Leadership and Negotiations”, particularly since the end of the 1998-1999 Kosovo Conflict.

The 11th edition of KSA2024 will organise two different parts:

PART I

  • Dates: 15– 25 July 2024
  • Visa deadline: 10 May 2024 with a final deadline of 14 June 2024

PART II

  • Dates: 5 – 15 August 2024, with a final deadline on 21 June 2024.

Both parts will employ integrated activities and lectures on human rights and peacebuilding, allowing students to embark on field trips.

Please note that the Academy also offers funding opportunities to cover the overall course fee which amounts to €1,050.

National Security and Intelligence Analysis Internship 2024

Offered by the Institute for the Study of War in Washington DC, students can immerse themselves in a 3 month-long programme surrounding relevant themes to national security. Aspiring candidates are invited to apply for this prestigious programme, designed to nurture the next generation of national security leaders. The programme is offered in-person and interns will have the opportunity to examine conflicts that are directly connected to America’s national security while engaging with policies and military research development.

  • Deadline: 2 August 2024 
  • When: 10 September- 13 December 2024
  • Monthly stipend: $1,000 which is liable to tax

The application process will require a CV, a university transcript, a personal statement of approximately 1,000 words, and a writing sample of five pages.
