Our vibrant English Department offers you the chance to discover a huge variety of exciting texts written across the centuries, including literature from English speaking countries across the world.

Based in the heart of London, we are ranked 5th in the UK for English (QS World Rankings, 2024). Here we explore English literature in all its periods, genres, styles and manifestations.

We pride ourselves on the range and diversity of the modules we offer on our degrees, giving you the freedom and flexibility to shape your degree to your interests. You'll have access to expert teaching that spans the seventh century to the present day and can choose from a huge range of topics encompassing creative writing, literature and science, performance and war writing, as well as the chronological range of literature written in English.

Our Central London location allows us to use the city as our classroom for embedding literary contexts. We enjoy unique partnerships with the institutions which surround us, such as Shakespeare's Globe and the Imperial War Museum, in addition to our strong connections with universities around the world.
