Research & Expertise

Colleagues, postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate research students in the Department of English produce world-leading and impactful research on literary culture and creative practice from the medieval to the contemporary.

The Department ranked second in the UK for the number of top-rated (4*) research outputs in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, with 90 per cent overall rating for either ‘world leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*) research and 100 per cent at 4* and 3* for research environment.

Our department celebrates the historical and geographical scope of our research and our engagement with the cultural organisations around us. Research is organised around six strands, each of which brings research staff and postgraduate research students together to organise conferences, seminars, and research projects:
