Engineering outreach

The Engineering Department is committed to building a vibrant and diverse department.

One way we are supporting the next generation of engineers is through our outreach programmes, which are targeted to working with young people from groups that are under-represented in the wider engineering sector.

Through collaboration with other teams within King’s as well as with external organisations, we are bringing engineering to life for the engineers of the future.

Girls Robotics Challenge

A new year-long programme, where teams of students from Years 8 to 11 compete to design and build robots, supported by our world-leading scientists and engineers. Participants will follow a design-led approach, developing and improving their robots over the course of the year, before testing them at a final event at King’s together with teams from other schools. This is an amazing opportunity to gain a wealth of hands-on experience in all aspects of robotics, from electrical engineering and coding to product design and prototyping.

Girls into Electronics Day

A series of one day events, led by the UK Electronics Skills Foundation and hosted by King’s, alongside other leading universities across the UK. Open to female and non-binary students in years 10 to 13, these events help highlight the interesting and diverse careers studying electronics, computer science or engineering can open up. These interactive events are a unique opportunity for participants to develop their interest in electronics, with sample lectures, hands-on workshops and talks from engineers working in the sector.

Success for Black Engineers

A joint initiative between the Engineering Department and the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences, the Success for Black Engineers programme works with both school students interested in studying engineering, and current undergraduates, providing guidance, mentoring and opportunities to support success in engineering.

‘This is Engineering’ Partnership

We are proud to be a university partner on the Royal Academy of Engineering’s ‘This is Engineering’ programme. This digital campaign targets young people aged 13-18 and their influencers to promote engineering careers. It aims to showcase the exciting and rewarding aspects of engineering, with the goal of inspiring 1.5 million young people to become engineers by 2025, with at least half from underrepresented groups.
