Research centres

The School of Education, Communication & Society is split into three research centres. You can find out more about each of them using the links below.

Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR)

The Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) is an interdisciplinary research centre committed to using research to support professional practice and inform national and international public policy debate.

With particular strengths in sociology and applied philosophy, our work critically analyses and illuminates policy processes and effects in a range of global and local contexts and policy and practice settings. These include education, health and social care, youth work and the cultural sector.

Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CRESTEM)

The Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CRESTEM) undertakes research into teaching, learning and engagement in diverse contexts of STEM education.

Our work includes analyses of national and international datasets documenting student performances, design-based research aimed at supporting inclusion and equitable engagement, and analyses of policies and pedagogies underpinning environmental justice.

The Centre for Language, Discourse and Communication (LDC)

The Centre for Language, Discourse & Communication (LDC) conducts research in language education, sociolinguistics and discourse studies.

It provides empirically informed, conceptual accounts of the global implications of mobility and migration for language learning, citizenship and social inclusion, as well as for changes in (multi)lingual identity construction in everyday, professional and online settings.
