MA in Military & Security Studies

 

*Please note this programme is only available to military students enrolled on the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) at the Defence Academy of the UK*


The MA in Military and Security Studies builds upon the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) (ICSC(L)) to allow students to enhance their knowledge of military and security through active learning, individual participation and collaboration with fellow students.

The MA comprises a total of 180 credits as follows:

  • One 30 credit compulsory module (Command Leadership & Management)

  • One 30 credit compulsory module (Understanding Defence)

  • One 30 credit compulsory module (Land Warfare)

  • One 30 credit compulsory module (Critical Analysis of Battle)

  • One 60 credit dissertation core module (Defence Research Paper)

After successful completion of 60 credits, if students do not progress on the course they are eligible to leave with an exit award of a Postgraduate Certificate. 

After successful completion of 120 credits, if students do not progress on the course they are eligible to leave with an exit award of a Postgraduate Diploma. 

After successful completion of the full 180 credits, students will be awarded a Master of Arts.

Teaching

Teaching is presented through a variety of formal lectures and Q&A sessions, syndicate room discussions, and group activities.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out in two ways:

Summatively - oral presentations, exercises/simulations and roleplay/case studies/campaign presentations

Formatively - essays and dissertation paper

Enrolment

Please note that the MA in Military and Security Studies is only available to military and civil service students enrolled on the ICSC(L) course at the JSCSC. Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis taking previous educational and professional experience into account.

Home students - £7,828.00 over three years, ie £2,609.33 per year

International students - £16,225.36 over three years, so £5,408.45 per year

Home students - £8,321 over three years, ie £2,773.66 per year

International students - £17,205.37 over three years, so £5,735.12 per year

(25/26)

Home students - £8,822.75 over three years, ie £2,940.92 per year

International students - £18,411.47 over three years, so £6,137.16 per year
