PhD

PhD students work with experts in their field and are part of a vibrant and collaborative community of postgraduate researchers.

Our research environment was acclaimed in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) - with the joint-highest ranking nationally - and one of our greatest strengths is the collaborative spirit of inquiry which is offered by our interdisciplinary, multilinguistic and global approaches.

Research expertise covers an unusually wide range of topics and periods – from the medieval and Early Modern periods through to contemporary culture, literature and film. Beyond our grounding in European languages, we are a truly global network of scholars whose expertise spans the literatures and cultures of the Arabic-speaking worlds, Brazil, Ethiopia, Latin America, Lusophone and Francophone Africa, Rwanda and South Asia.

Our location in the centre of London offers access to an unparalleled variety of galleries, cinemas, theatres, specialist libraries and resources, including the Institute of Advanced Study (including the Institute of Modern Languages Research), Canning House, the Goethe-Institut, the Austrian Cultural Forum, and the Institut français.
