All the things you are not yet: A textile artwork

October 2013: a young woman leans over a medical technician's shoulder and takes a photograph of a computer monitor with her mobile phone. On the screen are images of two bundles of cells, which the technician is about to implant in her womb. They go on to grow into her two sons, Rufus and Rafe.

All The Things You Are Not YetThis project explored that photograph and the wider topic of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). Using emerging digital technologies, Dr Matthew Howard from the Centre for Robotics Research at King’s College London and textile artist Karina Thompson collaborated to create interactive textile artworks that responded to the presence of the audience to tell this story.

Karina Thompson has been working within studio textiles for over twenty years. Through a link with VSM (UK) Ltd and Pfaff sewing machines she has recently been experimenting with digitally programmed stitch.
