Nightwalker
I’ve always loved cities at night (Give me darkness. Give me neon and rain).
Night-time in my home corner of London before the new normal meant streets overflowing with people. Non-socially distanced queues for clubs, bars and fast food. Music spilling from the open windows of cars at every red light. All tomorrow’s parties happening right here, right now. But tonight, with the streets apocalyptically emptied, I can walk right through the heart of the city with only urban foxes, the distant revs of Deliveroo bikes, and my own footsteps for company.
Stood gratefully alone on the Millennium Bridge at night, watching the dark water, breathing our new clean air, I’m beginning to think I could get used to all this.
