Connecting colleagues across LGBTQ+ and health research

Recently Faculties from across King’s came together for the LGBTQ+ and Health in Research event. The event was an opportunity for researchers and students of all career levels across King’s to hold research stalls, poster presentations, network and give short presentations about their research in LGBTQ+ and health topic areas.

Alongside the presentations, students and staff were invited to ask questions and breakout into discussions throughout the afternoon. The event had a focus on networking, with the opportunity for multidisciplinary connections to be made and for researchers who might otherwise not interact having the chance to foster future collaborations.

The event aimed to encourage participants to be open minded in their approach to research, to consider their assumptions and think from others perspectives to create a safe and inclusive space to share and discuss ideas with mutual respect and diversity of personal experience.

Connecting LGBTQ+ focused research from across the King’s Faculties presented a chance to allow researchers to share their expertise and experiences, as well as spotlight the multidisciplinary approach to LGBTQ+ and health topics currently taking place.

It was well organized and felt very welcoming. The short presentations ensured a wide range of topics could be covered. They were also mostly very accessible, the language used made theme easy to understand. Whilst I thought I would be more interested in some topics than others I took something from nearly all of them (and found some I thought I wouldn't be as interested in more interesting that those I thought I would!).– Anonymous feedback

Researchers from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) and Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (FoLSM) provided discussion points for the day with research focusing on a variety of mental health topics and young people’s access to gender affirming care.

Presenters from the School of Social Sciences and Public Policy (SSPP) shared their findings on inequalities in mental health, the impact of the pandemic and how migration and cultural differences can shape the view of HIV medication. King’s Business School and The Dickson Poon School of Law (DPSoL) also shared their insight into the impacts of social media on mental health and family formation and legal regulation.

Feedback from the session has shown the positive impact that cross-Faculty events can have on connecting our research community, highlighting how collaboration can support King’s commitment to impactful research and service to society.
