CARICE - Our Clinicians

This page showcases the wide array of clinical researchers interested in studying resilience in an ageing population.  This includes clinicians, who are actively conducting research as well as those who support and provide the research infrastructure to enable the wide array of research projects.

Dr Jonathan Birns

Dr Jonathan Birns

Consultant in Stroke, Geriatrics and General Internal Medicine, GSTT
Honorary Reader, KCL; South East London Training Programme Director for Geriatric Medicine and Deputy Head of the London School of Medicine, NHSE. Research has mainly focussed on the evaluation of interprofessional learning and healthcare improvement, for which he has been awarded 17 grants (11 as primary investigator), totalling over £500,000, and published widely. He has also maintained research interests in cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), and stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, following on from his PhD in the field. Indeed, the findings from his PhD thesis led to the design of the multi-centre PRESERVE RCT (investigating blood pressure management in patients with SVD) that was funded by a £980,000 British Heart Foundation/Stroke Association Programme Grant (on which he was a co-applicant)

Professor Philip Chowienczyk

Professor Philip Chowienczyk is an academic and researcher at King’s College London (KCL). He serves as a Professor of Cardiovascular Clinical Pharmacology and is recognized for his expertise in cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology. His research primarily focuses on arterial function, blood pressure regulation, and the mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases. Chowienczyk leads various studies investigating the effects of different pharmacological agents on cardiovascular health, aiming to improve the understanding and treatment of conditions such as hypertension and atherosclerosis.His work involves both clinical and translational research, bridging the gap between laboratory findings and patient care.

Professor Jugdeep Dhesi

Professor Jugdeep Dhesi is a Consultant Geriatrician, and the clinical lead for Perioperative medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS). She has been elected the next President of the British Geriatric Society (BGS), starting in November 2024.  She is also an Honorary Professor at King’s College London and an Associate Professor at University College London. Professor Dhesi’s research specialities include perioperative assessment and optimization, health services research related to perioperative pathways, and postoperative delirium.

Professor Catherine Evans

Professor Catherine Evans specialises in palliative care and is an honorary nurse consultant. She holds a joint post at cicely Saunders Institute at king’s college London and at the Sussex community NHS and foundation Trust. Her research focuses on palliative care for older adults who suffer from multimorbidities such as frailty and dementia. Professor Evans also co-leads the Empowering Better End of Life Dementia Care (EMBED-Care) and the COvPall_CareHome study, which examines the care home responses to palliative care. 

 
Dan Furmedge

Dr Dan Furmedge

Dr Dan Furmedge is a consultant physician in geriatric and internal medicine at GSTT, honorary senior clinical lecturer at KCL, training programme director for internal medicine training at NHSE and censor at RCP London. His interests include postgraduate medical education, assessment in medical education, community geriatric medicine and hospital at home and internal medicine. He is particularly interested in developing and promoting the skills in generalism, shared decision medicine and pragmatic, realistic medicine.

David Gray

David Gray has worked as a dietician for many years in GSTT. He is now a clinical lead dietician in older adults and is completing an NIHR doctoral fellowship. His interests including hydration, hospital food service, education, dementia and delirium, dysphagia, ethical issues in nutrition and hydration and sarcopenia. He is the author of a textbook chapter on the dietetic management of multimorbidity and an active member of national interest groups for both nutrition and hydration in older people.

Dr Jeremy Johnson

Dr Jeremy Johnson is a consultant neurologist, specialising in cognitive disorders anddementia at King's College Hospital and adjunct senior lecturer in cognitive neurology at KCL. His PhD (UCL) was in auditory cognition (the "mind's ear") and how it fails in Alzheimer's disease and the Frontotemporal dementias including primary progressive aphasia. His current research interests include auditory cognition, vascular ageing, MND/FTD and sleep and homeostasis.

Dr Tania Kalsi

Dr Tania Kalsi is a consultant physician in the department of ageing and health. She is the clinical lead for care home support and has been involved in the GOLD service, which is renowned for its work in improving older people’s health before and after surgery.Her research interests include cancer in older people, care home medicine and health service research.

Dr Mark Kinirons 

Dr Mark Kinirons is a consultant physician. He is accredited in clinical pharmacology, general medicine and geriatric medicine. In particular, he focuses on dementia and delirium, and as such has expertise in memory issues, falls and medication for older people. Recently he has been involved in the Excellence in Dementia Care Award, the ‘Barbara’s Story’ Training film, the Mission to Make London Dementia-friendly and the Community Falls Prevention project.

He also has a key role in research as the Guys and St Thomas’ Research and Development Chair for integrated systems medicine.

Dr Kevin O’Gallagher

Dr Kevin O’Gallagher is a clinician scientist and an honorary consultant in Interventional Cardiology with the Coronary research group. He is an expert in diagnosis and treatment of heart artery disease. His research interests include translational research into cardiac ischemia and personalised treatments for ischemic heart disease.

Dr Jude Partridge

Dr Jude Partridge is a consultant geriatrician. She leads the POPS - vascular service and is also an honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London. Her research interests include Health services research, delirium and frailty in perioperative care.

 
Dr Schiff

Dr Rebekah Schiff

Rebekah Schiff has been a consultant geriatrician and general physician at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust since 2004.  She has extensive experience in the care of older people in hospital and community settings. She developed the short-term older persons unit (frailty unit) on the emergency floor. She also supported the creation of the Guy's and St Thomas' @home service, increasing community support to older people living at home and in care homes.

Dr Jennifer Stevenson

Dr Jennifer Stevenson is an honorary senior lecturer and clinical pharmacist specialising in optimising medication for older adults. Her work focuses on advancing the understanding of medication-related harm in those who suffer from frailty. She serves as an Integrated Care Pharmacist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Additionally, Dr. Stevenson contributes to the NHS Frailty Network, specifically within the education and training workstream.

Dr Carly Welch

Dr Carly Welch is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Experimental Medicine and a Consultant Geriatrician at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. She previously completed her PhD on the topic of "Acute sarcopenia - the last remaining acute organ insufficiency" at the University of Birmingham in 2022. Her research interests including understanding the underlying ageing mechanisms that lead to impaired resilience in older adults, including the clinical manifestations of frailty, sarcopenia, and delirium. Her research aims to translate new therapies into clinical populations to improve quality of life in older people.

She was recently awarded a large grant from the Wellcome Leap Dynamic Resilience programme as Co-Principal Investigator through a collaboration between King's College London and the University of Birmingham. She works clinically within the Geriatric Oncology Liaison development (GOLD) service within Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Julie Whitney

Dr Julie Whitney holds the position of a consultant physiotherapist and lecturer and specialises in geriatric medicine, focusing on the health and care of elderly patients. With extensive experience in her field, Dr. Whitney is committed to improving the quality of life for older adults through both clinical practice and research. Her work encompasses a broad range of issues affecting the elderly, including frailty, falls, and chronic disease management. In addition to her clinical duties, Dr. Whitney is active in research, aiming to advance the understanding and treatment of conditions prevalent in the elderly population.
