King’s MedTech Accelerator

 

The King's MedTech Accelerator is a 6-month, part-time programme for King's College London and King's Health Partners researchers and staff focused on transforming research innovations into viable healthcare ventures. 


 

Created and delivered by the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE), our 6-month, part-time and in-person programme provides an acceleration stream with specialist support for aspiring entrepreneurs in medical devices, including medical software, digital health and AI.

What We Offer

The King's MedTech Accelerator provides:

  • Commercialisation and entrepreneurship training tailored for medical and healthcare technologies, including workshops on intellectual property (IP), funding & investment, healthcare business models, and regulations.
  • Facilitation of networking with strategic advisors, medical innovators, healthcare leaders, industry partners and early-stage investors that can provide guidance and connections.
  • Pitch preparation and refinement for participants to showcase their commercial potential to external stakeholders.
  • Connection to additional translational programmes, incubators, and seed funding sources to further advance post-accelerator.

Eligibility

The King’s MedTech Accelerator programme is open to all our staff, including all academics, Early Career Researchers, research fellows, postdocs, clinical academics, support staff, and PhD candidates from across King's. The programme will expand further in its second year and be open to researchers and staff from King’s Health Partners.

Alumni of King’s who have graduated within 2 years of the programme's start are also eligible to participate.

  • Technologies should be at a minimum proof of concept stage.
  • Researchers should be actively looking to explore the commercialisation or licensing of their technology.
  • Applications are accepted from both institutional and non-institutional IP.
  • Postdocs and PhD candidates must have support and approval from their Principal Investigator or research supervisor to be on the programme.
  • We are also excited to welcome Digital Health Innovations in 2025. Leveraging our extensive network, we aim to support solutions with a strong digital element that treat, diagnose, or predict health outcomes. These may include software, analytics, wearables, or similar technologies.

Programme Outcomes

Through the King's MedTech Accelerator, participants will gain:

  • Entrepreneurship skills for advancing medical technologies through commercialisation frameworks for product-market fit, business model development, and stakeholder mapping.
  • Practical commercial development experience for healthcare technologies, including regulatory considerations, healthcare economics, value proposition design, and market analysis.
  • Capacity to assemble interdisciplinary teams, seek funding and partnerships, and effectively communicate to navigate the MedTech venture journey.

The translational output of our inaugural programme has been impressive with:

  • 2 translational grants
  • 2 projects accepted to the Innovate UK ICURe Programme
  • 2 founding teams created
  • 5 potential spin-outs
  • 1 new cross disciplinary academic collaboration between the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences and the School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • 1 new IP patent filed
  • 1 active licencing deal in negotiation
  • 2 potential spin-outs approached by investors

 

Available Support

The King's MedTech Accelerator provides a host of programme elements enabling researchers to advance their MedTech ventures, including:

  • 3-hour commercialisation skills masterclasses led by industry and academic specialists on topics like IP, market access, health economics, regulation, funding.
  • Monthly venture review sessions to evaluate progress and gain strategic feedback from peers and expert panellists.
  • Hands-on access and use of coworking office space facilities at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE).
  • Opportunity to pitch technology ventures at a Showcase Demo Day to executives, corporates and investors.
