Behind the Scenes of a Podcast: A Gamechanger's Perspective

Hi there! I'm Kanak, a recently graduated Psychology student and Gamechanger at the Entrepreneurship Institute. Being a Gamechanger means I can work flexibly over the summer alongside other projects and commitments (such as my own podcast). Keep reading to find out how the programme empowered me to be bolder in pursuing my goals...

What kickstarted and inspired you to start a podcast?

Coming from a science background, I would often get frustrated with how scientific information can be distorted in the media. Through meeting and interacting with people in my own life, I have seen how this has an effect on personal beliefs. During my third-year lectures, I was inspired by the expertise of my university professors and thought to myself... "Wow - they're speaking facts right now, people need to listen to what they have to say!"

This eventually led me to reaching out and interviewing them myself as I wanted to make their knowledge more accessible. I chose to do so in a podcast format so I could reach a wider audience, including those who may not have time to read or have never thought to learn about a particular topic.

How did you go from having the idea to releasing your first episode? What was involved?

Great question! I'll be honest, there are a lot of steps involved. I started by reaching out to a few people within my network to see which experts I could find with valuable information. From this, I compiled a list of people to contact and developed a clear vision of the style and visuals I wanted for my podcast.

For each episode, I select and research a topic before reaching out to an expert or academic in the field. Once agreed, I book a studio, conduct more research and prepare my own questions. I taught myself how to use the necessary equipment and software so I can record and edit the episode myself. Finally, I create social media posts, inform the academic, and officially release the episode.

How has being a Gamechanger helped your podcast?

The Entrepreneurship Institute's Gamechangers programme has empowered me to be bolder in pursuing my personal goals. The supportive environment, with everyone eager to help, is incredible - you just need to ask. The workshops are particularly useful - the networking session was my favourite as it offered valuable tips about promoting yourself and engaging with people you may not feel comfortable in doing so (but I am a big believer in having a diverse network so maybe I am biased...)!

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced so far?

My biggest challenge so far has been balancing my podcast with university and other commitments. It can be really challenging to find the right balance. I have learnt to allocate my time and find a schedule that works for me, although there can be sacrifices that are necessary for long-term benefits. It has been important for me to recognise that priorities can shift and projects don’t always need equal time and energy. It is a push and pull. Some weeks can require more focus on one area than others. This is something that I still struggle with and continue to work on.

What would you say to other students who have an idea but are yet to do something about it?

Don't be afraid to fail. Don't think that your idea has to be perfect, because there is no such thing. Starting is way better than not starting. Just take it one step at a time...

Start by looking at where you are and speak to people. No man is an island! There's no shame in asking for help and getting new perspectives - it is actually incredibly valuable. Everyone needs help and I wish I had spoken to people earlier. If there's no one you know personally that can help you, reach out to people online instead! From personal experience, most people are happy to help.

Allow yourself to dream, be bold and just go for what you want!

My #1 skill is ‘Get It Done,’ for sure. My podcast is still growing and developing, so I have just needed to get stuck in and get things done. At the end of the day, it's about carrying on even when you don't feel like it. I like to do this by reminding yourself of why I'm doing it in the first place.
