The Faculty of Arts & Humanities welcomes applications from potential visiting scholars. Successful applicants will be affiliated to one of the Arts & Humanities departments, and will be able to make use of King’s resources. Resources include library services via the Maughan Library, and IT services, such as a King’s email address.
Please note that King’s is not able to guarantee desk space, though scholars are welcome to use open ‘hot-desking’ spaces available to research students in the Maughan Library.
Appointments will normally be for one year in the first instance and will be renewed only in exceptional cases.
Typically access to King’s resources will cease at the end of the period of appointment. Account holders will receive an email to their affiliate account to warn them when their account is due to expire and may wish to set up mail forwarding if they are unlikely to check it regularly.
How to arrange being a visiting scholar at King's
If you are interested in visiting one of our departments and are not already in contact with one of our academic staff members, please get in touch via the relevant department. The department will be able to answer any queries you may have about the application process, and direct you to a list of academic staff member profiles so you can select who to approach to request as your nominator (sponsor).
Bench Fees
Please note that if your application is successful, a bench fee (see below) must be paid in full to the Faculty before your appointed start date. Payment should be made by debit or credit card, via the College’s Online Store. This fee is required to offset administrative and supervisory costs.
- Visiting appointments of up to six months: £500
- Visiting appointments of up to one year: £1,000
Former King’s staff members, former King’s PhD students, and visitors from King’s partner organisations (where a Memorandum of Understanding is in place) will not be charged a bench fee. If you fit one of these criteria, please ensure that you mention this when making initial contact with the department.
Further information for members of the Faculty about the process of appointing visiting scholars can be found on the Arts & Humanities intranet (King's login only).
