BSc Adult Nursing career prospects

BSc Adult Nursing student Jack talks about the career prospects available after his degree.

After studying BSc Adult Nursing, the obvious main career route is to go into Nursing. The branches of nursing have expanded greatly; the prospect of becoming a community nurse or a clinical specialist nursing all require a nursing degree.

However, the career pathway for this degree doesn’t stop with only nursing. Nursing can provide a good foundation into other medical fields such as medicine, physiotherapy and psychology. The academic knowledge you gain in lectures and seminars integrates with the tasks you have to meet in practice. This allows you to apply what you have learnt into practice and get that rare hands on experience that other degrees can’t offer.

Personally, I chose the degree for its unique mixture of clinical and academic work. I wanted a course where it allowed me to apply hands-on what I have learnt academically. Not only does it help me understand the concept and its principle, it is in my opinion the best way to remember information. In terms of career prospects, I chose nursing for the vast number of opportunities it opens up in the medical field.

King’s College London  works with numerous NHS trusts, including King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH)  and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. My home trust is KCH, and your placement allows you to discover which specialties you prefer. From what I have experienced so far, haematology and Emergency Department are two of my favourite departments, and one of which has offered me an opportunity to work for them upon graduation.

Career fairs organised by the trust and the university really help you gain an insight into what different roles and fields entail. Attending the fair made me realise which field of work I really wanted to learn more about in.

However, if you are coming to the end of your degree and still aren’t particularly sure what career path you want to take, King’s offer a Careers Service which can be arranged easily online, and they can help you find where you want to be.
