King's nursing and midwifery students receive prestigious Cavell Nurses' Trust Awards

Three inspirational nursing and midwifery students from King’s College London were honoured by charity Cavell Nurses’ Trust for their passion and commitment to their studies, at a prestigious awards ceremony in London on Thursday 22 June.

Lily Parham, a postgraduate diploma in adult nursing student won the Edith Cavell Leadership Award and is the third student from King’s to receive the charity’s top award for leadership. Katharine Siobhan Pearson, a BSc midwifery student was awarded Outstanding Student Midwife, and the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award was presented to Marina Down, a BSc mental health nursing student.

The Cavell Nurses’ Trust Awards commemorate nurse Edith Cavell’s bravery, enthusiasm for education and promoting nursing care, and dedication to the profession. All three students were recognised for their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work in their studies, with each winning funding to put towards a travel placement of their choice, enabling them to further develop their nursing and midwifery skills.

Lily commented “Edith Cavell’s dedication to completely unbiased care, treating everyone as being equal and deserving of the highest standard of care, is something that has inspired me. I hope to follow Edith’s example and practise this approach in my nursing career.”

Katharine said “I was so surprised and excited to have won the Outstanding Student Midwife Award. It is a great honour and I’m really proud to have my work recognised in this way.”

Marina said “I’m honoured to have won this award and to have the opportunity to experience mental health services overseas will be invaluable for my future career.”

The ceremony was attended by nurses, midwives and healthcare leaders at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in Central London.

Professor Ian Norman, Executive Dean, Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery said: “I am incredibly proud that our students have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the nursing and midwifery professions, even at this early stage of their careers.  They are role models for their peers and it is an honour for us at King’s to teach and learn from such talented students.”

Cavell Nurses’ Trust Chairman Simon Knighton said: “The Cavell Nurses’ Trust Awards help us be here for nurses and midwives, either by supporting them when they face hardship or by celebrating the amazing work that they do every day."

The Edith Cavell Leadership Award is sponsored by NHS Professionals, the Outstanding Student Midwife Award is sponsored by workwear manufacturer Alexandra, and the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award is sponsored by the Embassy of Belgium in the UK.
