Faculty hosts first public screening of Inside Out of Mind

Actors in Inside Out of MindThe Faculty recently hosted the first public showing of Inside Out of Mind, a film of a play based on research in dementia care wards, undertaken by colleagues at the University of Nottingham (11 November 2015).

This influential film of the play details the day to day world of dementia care services in an NHS ward. A powerful example of the innovative dissemination of ethnographic research findings (interviews and observation) it has the potential for use as a tool for educating direct care workers about key issues in dementia services.

Inside Out of Mind was written and directed by Tanya Myers of Meeting Ground Theatre Company and Professor Justine Schneider, University of Nottingham, who led the original research.

On the night, Jill Maben, Professor of Nursing Research in the Faculty hosted and chaired the event and Tanya and Professor Schneider took questions from a packed audience.

Professors Maben and Schneider are currently working together on another project where they are developing an intervention to improve relational care for older people for healthcare assistants.

Professor Maben said: "There was much that resonates and that is very familiar in the film. It also has much to teach us and as a researcher, it is an excellent example of innovative dissemination of research findings."

The purpose of the live recording was the same as the original show - to raise awareness of the work that health and social care support staff do, particularly in the Cinderella specialisms. By putting their working life on stage in a non-judgemental way, the recording give an an opportunity for reflection and dialogue about issues that concern people, both as carers and as cared-for.

This link takes you to a 3 minute clip where a carer, trainers and nurses speak about how the play has affected them and their work.
