Student Satisfaction High
Results of the 2012 National Student Survey (NSS), published today, reveal student satisfaction to be high for the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery. Nursing students rated their overall satisfaction with their course at 84%, and midwifery students at 88%, with both teaching and academic support highlighted as the School’s key strengths.
The NSS is an annual survey, run independently by Ipsos Mori, and is designed to gather feedback from final year, undergraduate students about the quality of their degree courses. The questionnaire covers a range of topics including personal development, learning resources and assessment and feedback. The feedback is then used by universities to continue enhancing the student experience.
Professor Helen McCutcheon, Head of the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, said:
'We are delighted that overall student satisfaction with our nursing and midwifery programmes is high. The student experience is a key focus for the School and each year we put in place action plans to respond to the previous year’s feedback.'
In particular, over 90% of midwifery students who responded to the survey felt that teaching staff were good at explaining things, were enthusiastic and made the subject interesting. Furthermore, 90% of nursing students stated that they were always able to contact a member of staff when they needed to. Organisation and management of courses was also highlighted as an area of significant satisfaction.
One nursing student said:
“I feel completely prepared for a nursing career. The teaching I have received has been first class...the lecturers have been stimulating and inspiring.”
Chelsie Sills, Chair of the School’s Nightingale Student Council, said:
'The NSS results reflect the School’s commitment to ensuring an excellent student experience. The Nightingale Student Council will continue to work closely with staff, on behalf of the student body, to develop further plans and initiatives based on student feedback throughout the year, as well as in the NSS.'
