King's launches innovative postgraduate pre-registration midwifery programme
The Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery at King’s College London has launched a new 18 month Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery Practice with Registration as a Midwife. This forms part of the School’s pre-registration education programme and will give Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registered adult branch nurses the opportunity to study at postgraduate level to become registered midwives.
Helen McCutcheon, Head of the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, said:
‘This pre-registration postgraduate programme in midwifery aims to provide world class healthcare in childbirth for women and their families through excellence in research, education and training. Our vision is to support the transferable knowledge, skills and professional insights that graduate nurses bring to the midwifery profession in order to develop a workforce that is able to demonstrate enhanced research capability and excellence, as well as autonomy in clinical and academic practice. We are committed to investing in a future that can readily ‘make a difference’ to the care of women and their families through the generation and critical review of evidence and the strengthening of implementation of known healthcare benefits in maternity care.’
The Postgraduate Diploma qualification comprises two-thirds of a Master's qualification and on completion students are eligible to apply for funding to complete a Masters in Midwifery immediately or may choose to continue studying at a later date.
The programme, which was approved by the NMC in September 2011, will replace the School’s previous 18 month BSc Midwifery Practice for graduates and will start in September 2012. Students are NHS salaried employees during their training and on successful completion job opportunities are available locally, nationally and internationally.
Students will benefit from King's College London’s position as partner with two Academic Health Sciences Centres (AHSC), King’s Health Partners and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. They will also enjoy clinical placement opportunities in a number of leading London maternity units such as Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Lewisham Hospital NHS Trust and South London Healthcare NHS Trust.
