King's PhD student receives Outstanding Achievement Award from Chinese Government

King’s PhD student, Jia Liu supervised by Dr Shuāngyŭ Lĭ and Elaine Gill, has received the award for ‘Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad’ by the China Scholarship Council, a non-profit agency affiliated with China's Ministry of Education.

Jia is investigating how medical students develop their clinical cultural competence as they participate in curricular and extracurricular activities at medical school. This study is a timely response to the demand for future doctors to be able to provide culturally appropriate, sensitive and safe care to all patients despite their diverse sociocultural backgrounds in the UK.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Chinese Embassy in London on Wednesday 10 April 2019. Chinese ambassador Xiaoming Liu presented certificates and scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 USD to the awarded students.

The award for ‘Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad’ was set up by the China Scholarship Council in 2003 and recognises the academic excellence of Chinese students pursuing their PhD studies overseas.

Since the award was established, a total of 5,915 outstanding students have received the highest honour given by the Chinese government to students studying in foreign universities who do not receive financial support from the government.
