New Power and Influence Skills Training Offered to LLM Students
This month, students undertaking the LLM course at The Dickson Poon School of Law were offered the opportunity to undertake a supplementary skills training seminar on 'Power and Influence', delivered by José María de Areilza.
José delivers his course in an interactive and practical style, using real life case studies and referencing popular culture, like political drama The West Wing.
Whilst typically delivered to MBA students, José says that the course is beneficial for everyone- from lawyers, to those in politics and indeed all work scenarios. "It is a course about getting things done in the real world, where politics and personalities can often seem to hinder rather than help you. I think lawyers like every profession are definitely in need of this skill base,' he said.
José María de Areilza is a Professor of Law at ESADE in Madrid and also Secretary General of the Aspen Institute Espana, which is affiliated with and modelled on the highly influential US think tank, Aspen Institute. Until 2012 he was Dean of the IE Law School in Madrid.
José has been a good friend to the School, having visited on a number of occasions in previous years and was a founding member of the Annual Law Deans' Conference, which was hosted by King's in 2012.
José has also previously worked as an Advisor to the Spanish Prime Minister on foreign affairs (1996-2000). He said it was like working in a lab for four years. 'I'd looked at foreign affairs from a theoretical point of view, so it was fantastic to be part of the decision making process.'
José also writes a weekly column on international relations for ABC, a national Spanish newspaper.
